Dr. David V. Sciarretta
AEA Superintendent
Dear AEA Community,
As we return from winter break, I want to warmly welcome you back and share my excitement for the months ahead as we continue this school year together.
Over the past several months, our community has navigated change, challenge, and growth. I want to take a moment to sincerely thank our families, staff, and students for your resilience, flexibility, and unwavering commitment to one another. Your dedication and perseverance are what make our school community strong, and I am deeply grateful for the patience and trust you have shown during this time.
Moving forward, we remain optimistic and committed to embracing change as an opportunity to learn, improve, and grow together. This new phase of the school year brings renewed energy, fresh goals, and exciting possibilities, and we look ahead with enthusiasm.
I would also like to share an important update with our families. Our first lottery for the 2026–27 school year will be announced later this month for incoming kindergarten and 6th-grade families. We encourage interested families to stay tuned for additional details and upcoming communications.
Lastly, please note that our upcoming Board Meeting has been rescheduled to January 27 and will be held at our middle school campus in the MPR. We encourage our community members to attend and stay engaged in the important work ahead.
Thank you for being an essential part of our AEA community. We look forward to a successful remainder of the school year filled with learning, collaboration, and continued growth.
Sincerely,
Dr. David Sciarretta, Ed. D.,
AEA Superintendent

Michelle Guarino
Elementary School Administrator Site Leader
Greetings AEA Families,
I would like to wish our families a happy New Year and warmly welcome you back to campus. Our students have returned well rested, eager, and ready to learn.
As we reflect on the end of our first semester, I would like to share several highlights. This fall, we welcomed back the Safe School Ambassadors program from Community Matters—an evidence-based, student-centered initiative that promotes a positive school climate through an “inside-out” approach. Approximately 40 fourth- and fifth-grade students were trained to identify misbehavior and develop constructive problem-solving skills. These students continue to meet throughout the year to share observations and collaborate on solutions. This week, they held their third meeting of the school year and are working together to raise campus-wide awareness.
The semester also concluded with our student grief support groups, led by Elizabeth Hospice and supported by our school counselor, Ms. Ordonez. These groups provide students with a safe space to learn, grow, and normalize the grief experience alongside their peers. Families interested in future groups for a child who has experienced a recent loss are encouraged to contact Ms. Ordonez at aordonez@aeacs.org.
The week leading into winter break included enriching field trips and assemblies. On December 15, our fourth-grade students participated in a “History in a Trunk” assembly aligned with their IB unit, Where We Are in Place and Time. Additionally, our second-grade classes visited the Water Conservation Garden in El Cajon, in connection with their “Sharing the Planet” unit, and students enjoyed learning about plant life and ways to conserve water and support the environment.
As we begin the second semester, we will continue refining our German language instructional model and implementing our Benchmark program, which supports both ELA and Designated English Language Learner instruction. Our Literacy and English Language Development Interventionists will also start working weekly with our upper-grade English Language Learners to support preparation for ELPAC testing, which begins in February. This additional intervention will help build both student language skills and their confidence.
We are pleased to share that the first round of interviews to assess German-speaker priority for the 2026/27 school year, has been successfully completed. It was a joy to meet prospective students and families, and we are grateful for the interest in our school community. Thank you to our staff for supporting a smooth and welcoming interview process.
We appreciate your partnership and support with the following reminders:
- Please do not send students to school wearing smart watches. If brought to school, smart watches, like cell phones, must be turned off and kept in backpacks.
- Outerwear should be navy blue with an AEA logo, except during severe weather.
- For drop-off and dismissal safety:
- Do not double park.
- Do not block neighbors’ driveways.
- Vehicle drop-off and pick-up are at the A Street back gate only.
Thank you for entrusting us with your children. We look forward to continuing our partnership as we provide high-quality teaching, learning, and enrichment experiences for all students.
Warmly,
Michelle Guarino

Dear AEA Families,
Happy New Year and welcome to the start of Semester Two. We hope the holiday break provided time for rest, reflection, and meaningful moments with family and friends.
As we begin the new year and a new semester, we look forward to continued growth, learning, and success for all students. The Second semester brings fresh opportunities to set goals, strengthen skills, and engage fully in our school community. Our staff remains committed to supporting students academically, socially, and emotionally as we move forward together. I want to inform you that from January 18th until February 1st, I will be representing AEA, San Diego and California in Finland as part of the Fulbright Program, in partnership with the Fulbright Finland Foundation and the Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), the Fulbright Program, and IREX: “The Fulbright Leaders for Global Schools Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State with funding provided by the U.S. Government and administered by IREX.” Distinguished K-12 school and district administrators from 12 states and DC make up the 2025-2026 Fulbright Leaders for Global Schools cohort.
During my absence, Mr. Vozzolo, our Assistant Principal, will serve as the primary contact for all administrative matters. I am fully confident that our staff will continue to provide excellent support and maintain a high level of service for our students. I look forward to returning and sharing my experience and learning with our entire AEA community.
Please look out for an exciting new logo and apparel design opportunity launching soon. This initiative will allow students to engage in the full creative process, from concept development to final design, while learning about branding, entrepreneurship, and collaboration. Selected designs may be featured on school apparel, allowing students to see their work brought to life and earn income through sales.
We are currently in the early planning phase for a Spring community celebration event. This event is intended to bring together students, families, and staff for a shared experience that highlights school spirit, student achievements, and community connection. More information, including dates and activities, will be shared as plans are finalized.
Girls’ and Boys’ Basketball seasons will begin at the end of the month. Students interested in participating should be prepared for upcoming tryouts and practices. Additional details regarding schedules, eligibility, and expectations will be communicated shortly.
The Clubs Page is being updated to reflect current and new opportunities for student involvement. Families and students are encouraged to review the page regularly, as it will serve as the primary source for information on club offerings, meeting times, and participation details.
Our Grade Level teams will be hosting our 1st semester awards ceremony on February 4th. Please look for more specific information, but students receiving awards will be recognized on February 4th during their PE/Language periods.
The Children and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative (CYBHI) is a statewide effort to strengthen behavioral health supports for children, youth, and families. Through schools and community partnerships, CYBHI expands access to prevention, early intervention, and wellness services that support students’ mental and emotional well-being. More information will follow in the next few weeks regarding how schools benefit from this program.
International Exchanges & Student Travel
As we step into 2026, we’re getting closer to our exciting departure to Germany (April 29–May 15)—and we couldn’t be more excited.
We’re also proud to kick off our brand-new AEA Global Explorers program, with Madrid as our first 2026 destination. And as a special addition to AEA Global Explorers; Guatemala! — planned for Spring Break as a meaningful blend of cultural exploration and service learning. More to come…
Thank you for your continued partnership and support. We wish our students and families a positive, productive, and successful Semester and New Year!

Avant Language Assessment
Last year, students participated in the Avant Language Assessment. This test measures proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Strong performance can qualify students for high school world language credit, recognizing their existing skills and allowing them to advance more quickly in their language studies. We will have students continue this assessment in the spring. Students in German will also continue to be assessed on the DSD as we have for many years.
For more information about the assessment, visit Avant’s website.
Pick-up & Drop-off Logistics
Elementary School
AEA is committed to keeping our students safe and being a good neighborhood partner.
Our families must obey traffic rules or risk citations.
We need our families to follow the crucial protocols below:
- Refrain from blocking our crosswalks with your vehicle.
- Refrain from blocking our neighbors’ driveways.
- Do not move our neighbor’s trash cans.
- Do not double park to drop off or pick up your children.
- Legally park and walk your student in through the front gate on A Street.
Vehicle drop-off and pick-up are at our A Street Back Gate ONLY.
Middle School
For student drop-off and pick-up, we kindly ask families to use the rear of the school whenever possible. While we understand the front entrance may feel more convenient, it quickly becomes congested. Please remember to slow down and avoid double parking, as this creates a backlog that can spill onto Market Street and cause traffic jams.
The San Diego Police Department is regularly in the area and may issue citations for double parking or obstructing the normal flow of traffic. Your cooperation helps keep our students safe and traffic moving smoothly.
