Dr. David V. Sciarretta
AEA Superintendent
Dear AEA Community,
The first semester of the 2025/26 school year has included significant change at AEA. Schools, like families, grow and evolve. With that growth can come transitions that feel challenging or uncertain at times. Throughout it all, our families and staff have shown patience, resilience, and a shared commitment to ensuring students remain the center of every decision we make.
What has remained constant is AEA’s dedication to providing a high-quality, caring, and globally focused education. Our students continue to inspire us with their curiosity, creativity, and perseverance, and we are grateful for the opportunity to learn alongside them each day.
As we head into winter break, I hope this time allows everyone the opportunity to rest, reconnect, and enjoy moments of joy together. We look forward to welcoming students back in the new year, refreshed and ready for continued growth and learning.
Wishing everyone a peaceful holiday season and a happy, healthy New Year.
Sincerely,
Dr. David Sciarretta, Ed. D.,
AEA Superintendent

Greetings AEA Families,
As we close the first semester and begin winter break, I want to thank the entire AEA community, especially our amazing students and incredible staff, for a productive and successful semester.
This semester, we continued to strengthen our IB PYP program through meaningful field trips, assemblies, and engaging student provocations. Our Wellness Space has provided students with a safe place to connect with trusted adults, take breaks when needed, and work through conflicts with peers. We are also proud of our student leaders who serve as Crossing Guards, PE Ambassadors, Student Greeters, Reading Buddies, and Safe School Ambassadors.
We enjoyed schoolwide celebrations such as German Reunification Day, Lanternfest, and St. Nikolaus. Students were recognized for their efforts and growth through I See IB tickets and IB Attribute Awards. There is even more to celebrate, and we look forward to continuing to make AEA a place where your students feel they belong and want to be in 2026.
As lifelong learners, our teachers and staff will continue reflecting on teaching and learning through ongoing professional development and collaboration in support of our new ELA, DELD, and German curriculum going forward in the spring semester.
First semester report cards will be available upon our return from break, on Friday, January 16, 2025. Grades 1–5 will be posted in PowerSchool, and report cards for TK–K will be sent home in hard copy. Please log in to the PowerSchool portal to view semester grades on January 16th. If you need your child’s login information, please contact AEA Tech Support at support@aeacs.org.
I wish you and your family a wonderful holiday break and a happy new year. Thank you for your continued partnership.

Dr. Jose Diaz
Middle School Principal
Dear AEA Families,
As we approach the end of the fall semester, I would like to share a few important updates and celebrate several highlights from across our AEACMS. It has been a busy and rewarding Semester for our students, staff, and families.
Fall Athletics & Playoffs
Our fall athletics season is coming to a close, and we are proud to share that our co-ed flag football team won its first championship. This accomplishment reflects the hard work, commitment, and teamwork of our student-athletes and coaches. Throughout the season, our teams have demonstrated strong school spirit, sportsmanship, and student engagement, and we look forward to cheering them on in the upcoming games. Congrats to our Coaches Ray McCreary and Jazzmine Mota for bringing home the first AEA Flag Football Championship.
Grades & Semester Reporting
As the semester comes to a close, grades will be finalized and available in PowerSchool. Our teachers have been working closely with students to support their progress and ensure they finish the term strong. We appreciate the partnership with families in supporting student learning and encourage you to review grades and reach out to teachers with any questions. If you would like to access final grades via the PowerSchool Application, our code is SDST. Please reach out to AEA Tech Support for any login issues.
Construction Impact
As you know, ongoing construction at our future high school has affected traffic patterns and daily routines. While this has created some challenges, we are grateful for the patience and flexibility shown by our students, families, and staff.
End-of-Semester Events
The final weeks of the semester include several exciting and meaningful experiences for our students. Our 7th-grade students will participate in their annual zoo trip, a long-standing tradition that supports learning beyond the classroom. In addition, our 6th-grade students will attend their annual camp experience at Camp Marston. These activities play an important role in building community, strengthening relationships, and creating lasting memories for our students. Also, a special thank you to our wellness team for coordinating and putting on another community event benefiting our AEA families in conjunction with the San Diego Police Foundation.
Music Program Highlights
We are proud to recognize Mr. Klein, our music teacher, for his outstanding work with our students this semester. Under his leadership, the music program has showcased student talent through several performances, including a feature on KUSI, performances at December Nights, and a recent appearance at Wintermarkt. These opportunities have enriched our students’ learning experiences and strengthened our school’s connection to the broader community.
Career-Readiness Expansion: K–12 Strong Workforce Program Grant
One of the most exciting developments this semester is the award of the K–12 Strong Workforce Program Grant. This grant will expand our career-readiness opportunities and strengthen our Future Ready Pathways, giving students more chances to explore career options, engage in hands-on learning, and prepare for future success. The official award amount will be announced in late December, and we anticipate funding of approximately $250,000 over the next three years. We are grateful for this support and look forward to sharing more details as the program develops. The program will allow students to learn and explore career opportunities within the Technology and Health Fields. More information to follow in the coming months!
Looking forward to spring!
Our winter sports season is underway. Please continue to cheer them on and remind students to check the Athletics website for more information and schedules.

Student Expectations
At AEACMS, we believe in fostering a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment. When behavior concerns arise, our staff responds with a focus on reflection, restorative practices, and support to help students learn from their choices. We encourage all families to review our expectations outlined in the Student Handbook and continue to review expectations with your children.
When issues arise, we have several ways to communicate information, which are outlined below.
Front Desk: 619-780-0400
Powerschool Powerhub: Messages and direct communication with staff and teachers.
PowerSchool Schoology: Our Learning Management System
Behavior Support: Our behavior support system
!! Please contact support@aeacs.org for login information.
Avant Language Assessment
Last year, students participated in the Avant Language Assessment. This test measures proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Strong performance can qualify students for high school world language credit, recognizing their existing skills and allowing them to advance more quickly in their language studies. We will have students continue this assessment in the spring. Students in German will also continue to be assessed on the DSD as we have for many years.
For more information about the assessment, visit Avant’s website.
Pick up & Drop-Off Logistics
Elementary School
AEA is committed to keeping our students safe and being a good neighborhood partner.
Our families must obey traffic rules or risk citations.
We need our families to follow the crucial protocols below:
- Refrain from blocking our crosswalks with your vehicle.
- Refrain from blocking our neighbors’ driveways.
- Do not move our neighbor’s trash cans.
- Do not double park to drop off or pick up your children.
- Legally park and walk your student in through the front gate on A Street.
Vehicle drop-off and pick-up are at our A Street Back Gate ONLY.
Middle School
For student drop-off and pick-up, we kindly ask families to use the rear of the school whenever possible. While we understand the front entrance may feel more convenient, it quickly becomes congested. Please remember to slow down and avoid double parking, as this creates a backlog that can spill onto Market Street and cause traffic jams.
The San Diego Police Department is regularly in the area and may issue citations for double parking or obstructing the normal flow of traffic. Your cooperation helps keep our students safe and traffic moving smoothly.
