Dear Elementary Families,

The past several weeks have provided our students with a wide range of engaging, transdisciplinary learning experiences and meaningful celebrations.

Our first grade team launched their “How We Express Ourselves” Unit of Inquiry with a creative provocation centered on the life of pirates. Students immersed themselves in the experience by brainstorming how to design a ship, what clothing would be appropriate, the potential dangers they might encounter, and strategies for problem-solving along the way. The level of imagination, collaboration, and critical thinking on display was impressive.

Field trips continue to be a powerful extension of classroom learning. Over the last month, several grade levels participated in rich, off-campus experiences. Our kindergarten and second grade students attended San Diego Civic Dance’s annual Collage performance in Balboa Park, which featured several AEA alumni. Additionally, our third grade students visited the Train Museum. Fourth grade students visited the Natural History Museum in connection with their “How the World Works” unit, and our fifth grade team revived the much-loved overnight field trip to the Maritime Museum. I am grateful to our staff and family volunteers for the coordination and support required to make these experiences possible. These are the moments students often remember most vividly.

We also celebrated important milestones on campus. Our Kindergarten team hosted a 100th Day of School celebration, providing students with engaging opportunities to strengthen their numeracy skills while having fun. Additionally, our attendance team recognized seventeen students who achieved perfect attendance during the first semester. These students received certificates in their classrooms and were honored, along with their families, at a celebratory pancake breakfast.

It is always inspiring to welcome alumni back to campus. Year after year, former students volunteer in classrooms, support our coaches, and contribute their time in meaningful ways. Their commitment to service speaks volumes about the strength of our community. Most recently, several eighth-grade alumni returned to share insights about the IB program and language acquisition, while also showcasing impressive soccer skills that delighted our students.

As educators, we remain committed to continuous growth. Our staff recently participated in Tier I behavior training and will engage in additional Tier II training sessions in April. We have also dedicated time to structured reflection of our new schoolwide English Language Arts Benchmark curriculum. Teachers collaborated across grade levels to analyze student work and refine instructional practices to ensure strong outcomes for all learners.

At our most recent Board of Trustees meeting, Jorge Mora was announced as our new elementary school principal. Although his official start date is March 16, 2026, Mr. Mora has already toured the campus, visited classrooms, and met many enthusiastic students. He looks forward to beginning his leadership at our site and hopes to visit again while concluding his tenure with the Chula Vista school district.

As we move into March and prepare for upcoming events—including our Jog-a-Thon, supported by our dedicated volunteers—I want to extend my sincere gratitude for your continued partnership and support of our learning community.

Warmly,

Michelle Guarino

Dear AEA Families,

The first month of 2026 is now behind us, and as February comes to a close, we have a lot to look forward to in the coming year. We already have a few keynote events that have taken place this year.

We had a big turnout for this year’s Second Annual Spelling Bee.  We had 21 contestants enter our spelling bee last Wednesday, February 4th, from the 6th grade, 7th grade, and 8th grade.

The ultimate champion was a seventh grader, Alyssa Alatorre, and she won her first-place spot on the word “chimneys”.  Alyssa will go on to represent AEA middle school in San Diego’s Regional Spelling Bee on March 5th at 9 AM at the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA.  We are excited for her win here and wish her the best of luck at the Regional Bee!

ELPAC testing is now in session, and families have been notified accordingly. Cindy Alvarez, our ELPAC coordinator, and Mr. Filizetti, our ELD teacher, have been working closely with staff and students to ensure the process runs smoothly. As one of the first state-mandated assessments of the school year, we encourage all students to put forth their best effort. Strong performance is necessary for achieving reclassification. We’re building on exciting momentum from last year, when we saw some of our highest reclassification rates in five years, with over 60% of English Learners demonstrating measurable progress.

We have begun our 7-day design studio with My 1 of 1.  Forty of our middle school students will meet with two design professionals to create a logo, brand design, and a marketing campaign.  This will lead to an Arts Showcase later in the Spring and hopefully to our students utilising this platform to sell their merchandise to the greater community during our Spring event.  On a similar note, basketball season is coming to an end in mid-March and Soccer tryouts are the first week of March.  Athletic information can be found HERE.

For the month of February we recognized Black History Month, Ramadan and the Lunar New Year. Presentations and a booth organized by our counseling interns were shared with all of our students.

Parent conferences are coming up in March. We will have minimum days from the 18th to the 20th. Please reach out to the respective grade level teams if you would like to schedule a conference.

Avant Language Assessment

Last year, students participated in the Avant Language Assessment. This test measures proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Strong performance can qualify students for high school world language credit, recognizing their existing skills and allowing them to advance more quickly in their language studies. We will have students continue this assessment in the spring. Students in German will also continue to be assessed on the DSD as we have for many years.

For more information about the assessment, visit Avant’s website.

Pick-up & Drop-off Logistics

Elementary School

AEA is committed to keeping our students safe and being a good neighborhood partner.

Our families must obey traffic rules or risk citations.

We need our families to follow the crucial protocols below:

  • Refrain from blocking our crosswalks with your vehicle.
  • Refrain from blocking our neighbors’ driveways.
  • Do not move our neighbor’s trash cans.
  • Do not double park to drop off or pick up your children.
  • Legally park and walk your student in through the front gate on A Street.

Vehicle drop-off and pick-up are at our A Street Back Gate ONLY.

Middle School

For student drop-off and pick-up, we kindly ask families to use the rear of the school whenever possible. While we understand the front entrance may feel more convenient, it quickly becomes congested. Please remember to slow down and avoid double parking, as this creates a backlog that can spill onto Market Street and cause traffic jams.

The San Diego Police Department is regularly in the area and may issue citations for double parking or obstructing the normal flow of traffic. Your cooperation helps keep our students safe and traffic moving smoothly.
