Update on including community voices on the BOT
Update on the work to include staff and more parent voices on the Board of Trustees In the spirit of open communication and transparency, the Board of Trustees’ Ad Hoc Advisory Committee on Shared Governance is pleased to share the following update on its work. At the April 14th Board meeting, the Committee presented and advocated its vision that the Board should include, for the first time, elected staff voices, as well as elected parent voices. The Board’s reception to this vision was positive and encouraging as it asked engaging questions and expressed universal support that AEA move forward in this direction. To help facilitate that movement, the Board asked the Committee to provide more granular detail on how elections for parent or staff Board seats should be run and how to properly navigate the conflicts of interest that may occasionally arise with AEA employees serving on the Board. At its own April 23rd meeting, the Committee commenced the work of drafting both an elections procedures guide and a conflict of interest guide. The Committee is dedicated to helping AEA achieve a governance structure at the Board level that restores trust and includes a broader array of stakeholder voices. With the added guidance we will provide, we hope soon to secure the Board’s resolve to fill its current two vacant seats with a parent and staff member. As we continue our work, we encourage and invite your attendance, whether in person or online, at our next Committee meeting, which will be on May 5th at 4:30 p.m. at the Elementary School.
