We continued AEA’s technology and food distribution efforts today.  All food (1000 meals) was fully distributed before the end of the 10am-12pm distribution window.  We are also grateful to announce that the AEA Covid Relief Fund has now exceeded $25,000 in generous donations to make our weekend food and educational materials distribution efforts possible.  This week we will also host the second Feeding the Front Lines event in partnership with Luna Grill (last week we distributed 250 meals from Luna in less than 40 minutes).

Today our leadership team continued our budget planning for the 2020-2021 school year.  While there are still some pieces of information that need to fall into place, we are facing between 7.7% and 10% cuts to the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF)–depending on if we factor in the modest COLA that had been proposed in January by Governor Newsom.  The AEA staff and public will have a chance to weigh in on the budget discussion at the May 26 Board of Trustees Budget Workshop as well as at the June Board meeting (more information on how to view and comment during those meetings coming soon).  We are fortunate to have built up responsible budget reserves over the last several years as part of a “rainy day fund.”  Now the rains have come, and it is time to strategically balance these resources with reductions to discretionary spending that will still preserve the heart of who we are as IB schools.

On a personal note, I had the opportunity to see first hand how these closures impact students, even at the high school level.  My daughter took her Advanced Placement Psychology exam today entirely online.  I’m proud of her persistence in seeing this process through, despite the closures and the need to make adjustments to the manner in which these exams are administered.  I don’t think I would have had the composure and commitment to have done so as a high school junior myself so many years ago.

Last but certainly not least, our very own middle schooler Brayden was honored by Baskin Robbins for his volunteerism and featured in a video honoring Pint Sized Heroes.

Stay healthy and safe.
