Today marks the end of week six since our schools closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  We officially passed the 21,000 mark with meals distributed to date, and are approaching 450 computers issued to our community to support distance learning.  Our administrative team is working on plans for a possible hybrid approach to teaching and learning (a combination of online and face-to-face) in order to adapt to constantly-changing circumstances and direction from government and health authorities.

We are also busy creating a range of budget scenarios to bring to our Board of Trustees at their May and June meetings.  The Board will also hold a virtual budget workshop in mid May (date TBA) to discuss budgeting recommendations from the AEA finance committee.  While there are more questions than answers, we do know that like the vast majority of public and private entities in this country we will be faced with reduced revenues for the upcoming year.  This will require courage, calm and clear priorities moving forward.

This week we are thankful for the support from the AEACES garden in providing fresh fruit and vegetables as part of the free community food distribution efforts.

CA Governor Newsom released an executive order yesterday aimed at increasing flexibility in key compliance areas for school districts and charter school organizations throughout the state.  Click here for more details.

Finally, a reminder that age has little to do with our ability to serve: one of our own students was recognized again on San Diego Mayor Faulconer’s Twitter account for stepping up and helping others (the photo is a bit difficult to see below–follow me on Twitter @dvs1970 for the original Tweet):

Stay safe, stay healthy and have a peaceful weekend.
