Message from Superintendent Sciarretta Regarding Recent Events

In case you missed it from today’s AEA Friday Message, here is a message from Superintendent Sciarretta regarding recent events:

Dear AEA Families:

My sincerest wish is that I will never again be compelled to write about incidents of terror or hate crimes in our nation or across the globe.  Tragically, I have penned too many letters to the AEA community on the topic over the past several years.  The deadly shooting at the Poway, CA synagogue last weekend, during observance of Passover, is the latest such example, and one that has impacted our San Diego family.  I find it particularly poignant that the day after these tragic events AEA sent a group of students to the Simon Wiesenthal Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles.  This scheduled field trip exposed our middle schoolers to the horrors of the Holocaust and provoked deep conversations about the prevalence of hate groups and the measures being taken to counter their destructive influence.  Students had the added privilege of discussing these topics with a Holocaust survivor.  Knowing that our students participated in this transformative field trip, and that all AEA students are steeped in the IB learner profile that highlights the importance of being ‘caring,’ gives me great hope for our future despite the somber events of the present.  In challenging times it is critical that we as a community recommit to reflection, understanding, and love of one another despite our differences.  Please rest assured that the leadership team at both AEA schools is always committed to supporting students in their questions about recent events and in allaying their fears as best we are able.  May we as an AEA community never become inured to the horror of watching sanctuaries of worship and institutions of learning be defiled by violence.  May these recent events galvanize us as a community to become stronger, more united, more politically active and more compassionate.

Respectfully,

Dr. Sciarretta

AEA Superintendent

Sinceramente,

Dr. Sciarretta

Superintendente de AEA
